The world Julia comes from is only slightly different from the real world; monsters and magic exist, but so sparsely and so secretly that they aren't common knowledge even to each other. For example, a werewolf will know other werewolves by sight and smell, but they'll be blind to the existence of vampires, or magic users, etc. There simply aren't enough of them in the world to be more than rumors.
Magic in this world comes with a price for reward. For example, Julia was brought back to life by a friend of hers when she was fifteen, and it cost him years of his life and started aging him prematurely. Julia is able to turn into a wolf, but each time she chooses to do it, she loses a bit of her humanity. It's something that she can gain back, if in lesser amounts, by choosing not to turn. However, she has no choice but to turn when the moon calls the wolf to the surface of her skin. She can will herself to change in part, like calling claws or teeth or strength or speed or sight. However, the more she calls upon these attributes, the more permanent they will be and the more marks they will leave.
If she chooses to spend more time as a wolf than as a person, in the end, it will be all that she is.
There are wolves out there who know this, and who know that they can be in control of the wolf and communicate with it, but Julia doesn't know any of that. She has avoided any wolves, just in case they might blame her for what happened to the old man. A person becomes a werewolf in this world by being given the wolf from another person. Once it was a ceremonial thing and a great honor because there were a finite amount of them in the world. But Julia was given the wolf under extreme duress; she was being held in a facility by the Company and had been experimented on because she had been brought back from the dead. The old man who was being held there knew his time was running out, and he could see that she would fight them, so he willed the wolf to her and died. If Julia were ever to pass along the wolf, because of their symbiotic relationship, she too would die.
People like her, and people who do magic are hunted however. Hunted, and experimented on by a secret organization that knows about what people can do called The Company. They seek to learn every bit of magic that they can for some nefarious purpose that remains unseen. All that she knows is that the people who work for it will kill in order to be able to collect each supernatural being that there is in the world. So far, they have held Julia once, and she's been on the run from them ever since.
